Woolwich Station
Crossrail
Woolwich station's location has a rich military past, reflected throughout the design of the project. At platform level, Capisco patinated over 25 large brass columns to a warm, earthy finish — a bespoke patina sitting between our Classic CAP 20 and CAP 2 ranges.
Each column was patinated in four parts at our works in 2018, with restorative works completed on-site in 2021 following installation damage.
In 2026 Capisco returned to carry out a full restoration of all columns, this time applying a protective coating by Coatings Tech to ensure long-term durability in this high-traffic environment.
The columns are a subtle nod to the site's former use as an armaments factory — a tile stripe in the regimental colours of the Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery, the regiments originally based here, runs the length of the platform as a quiet piece of living history.
