Hay Castle

Hay Castle is one of the great medieval defence structures still standing on the border of England and Wales. Dating from the 12th Century the project uses materials sensitively to create a modernist, airy gallery while respecting the historical nature of the space.

The former domicile of Ricahrd Booth, The King of Hay it was acquired by the Hay Castle Trust to create a centrepoint for the vibrant, literary town of Hay-On-Wye.

On the interior East Wing Capisco patinated a 3 flight steel-plate staircase to our Blackened Steel Finish, along with other steel elements. Completed in-situ and entirely by hand, the staircase provides a contemporary element to the restoration, unique texture and depth of colour contrasting with its raw stonework setting.

Capisco also patinated an approx 3mx6m outdoor copper exterior soffit to our Classic Cap 2 Patina. The final result forms the underneath of a viewing platform that compliments the medieval exterior stonework.
