Capisco's etching techniques open up a world of surface possibilities on brass — from dramatic texture to intricate pattern work.
Through several stages of acid etching, our technicians build up layers of depth in the metal surface, creating a complex, organic relief. The technique offers a range of creative outcomes, etched patterns with polished detailing set against an open patinated background, or a more organic raindrop effect achieved through the application process itself.
One of our most celebrated applications of this technique is the geometric pattern created for the Cambridge Mosque Mihrab — Europe's first eco-mosque. Using a vinyl resist, our team applied a traditional Islamic geometric pattern to the brass panels before etching with hydrochloric acid, patinating the recessed areas and polishing the raised detailing to reveal the design.
Following the etching process, surfaces can be patinated to a dark, medium or light finish — or hot-worked to create further variation in tone and character.
